Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong admitted in a new interview with NME that plans for a movie based on the band's 2004 punk opera American Idiot have been “pretty much scrapped.”
Following the success of a stage musical based on the album — which opened on Broadway in 2010 and ran for more than a year — it was announced in 2011 that a film version of the musical was in the works. By 2016, it was said to be development at cable network HBO.
Little has been heard about the project until now, with Armstrong revealing that it is no longer moving forward.
Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt told us a while back that Armstrong himself had a vision for the movie: “Billie has full pictures in his head of each of these characters and, you know, their emotional turmoil and triumphs and every bit of what we believe should be the making of a good movie, and that is emotional investment.”
American Idiot was one of Green Day's most successful albums, selling 16 million copies worldwide, winning a Grammy for Best Rock Album and spawning five hit singles, in addition to the Broadway musical and other stage productions.
Green Day's new album, Father Of All Motherf**kers, arrived last Friday (February 7th).
