The 1975 frontman Matty Healy has pledged to only play festivals that have as many female and non-binary performers as they do male performers.
He made the pledge after the U.K.'s prestigious Reading and Leeds festivals were criticized for announcing heavily male-dominated rosters.
Responding to the Guardian's music editor Laura Snapes on Twitter, Healy committed to adding a condition to the band's performance contract that they would only perform at festivals where women and non-binary artists comprise 50 percent of the lineup.
Healy noted that The 1975 have already committed to festivals that might not meet the criteria for gender balance, but that the band would include conditions of equality for all future appearances. He added, “I’m sure my agents are having kittens right now but time’s up man people need to act and not chat.”
The 1975 will release its new album, Notes On A Conditional Form, on April 24th.
