Theory, the band formerly known as Theory Of A Deadman, has notched its sixth Number One single at rock radio with the song “History Of Violence.” The Canadian act's previous chart-toppers include “Bad Girlfriend,” “Lowlife,” “So Happy” and “Rx (Medicate).”
Theory frontman Tyler Connolly told us not long ago that picking singles is always a mysterious process: “Before you make the record, you're like, 'Oh, this song's my favorite, this song's gonna be awesome,' and then you've got these other songs, you're like, you have fun playing them but you're like, 'I don't see this being a single, or I don't think a lot of people are gonna get into this.' But all of a sudden your label's like, 'We want to release this as a single,' and you're like, 'What, really?'”
“History Of Violence” can be found on Theory's recently released seventh studio LP, Say Nothing, which arrived at the end of last month. Both the song and its video tell a story of domestic violence in which a woman endures an abusive husband as long as she can before fighting back, ending up in jail but free of him at last.
Theory has been using the success of the song to encourage anyone affected by domestic abuse to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) for help.
For the band's upcoming U.S. dates, the quartet has partnered with the PLUS1 charity to donate one dollar from every ticket sold to organizations dedicated to breaking the cycle of domestic violence and building a community free of abuse. The U.S. run follows the band's current Canadian trek and starts April 9th in Nashville.
