Green Day, Weezer and Fall Out Boy have announced that the European leg of their joint Hella Mega Tour has been postponed until summer 2021.
The bands issued a joint statement saying, “There’s nothing that makes our bands happier than playing live shows, and maybe no other tour that we’ve all been excited for, but due to the current health crisis, we're having to postpone a number of our European shows.”
The three acts added, “We’re just a disappointed as you are, but the safety of our fans, staff and touring crew is our top priority. We’re working hard to finalize dates for the rescheduled shows next summer, so hold on to those tickets.”
Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt told us a while back that performing for European audiences, especially in non-English-speaking countries, creates its own set of challenges: “You have to really concentrate on the playing and the show aspect of it more than you can any sort of shtick or talking. You can't mention your current-events joke, you know, on stage because it doesn't work. It's like 'Wha-wha-wha wha-wha-wha-wha wha-wha.'”
The trek was supposed to begin on June 11th in Florence, Italy and run until June 29th in Dublin, Ireland. The exact postponed dates have not yet been specified.
The North American portion, slated for July, has not been officially canceled or postponed yet, but it seems unlikely that those dates will go forward this summer either.
