Rival Sons have shared an acoustic performance of its current single, “Shooting Stars.” The stripped-down take features vocalist Jay Buchanan providing a powerful solo version — with the help of producer Dave Cobb — of the song due to the conditions of the coronavirus outbreak.
Buchanan told American Songwriter, “(I) went down the road to Cobb's and set my mics up outside and tossed the cable ends to into his studio doorway. The densely wooded holler was really reverberating my voice back to me on the louder parts of the song. You can hear the birds and the dog barking throughout.”
Buchanan told us that “Shooting Stars” is based both on his upbringing and his view of the world around him: “I always look at things in terms of how to fix it, or how to improve it. And there's so much hurt everywhere, and there's so much fear, and this fear that pervades itself in a growing global culture that we have…it makes you want to write about the change that you want to see.”
The studio version of “Shooting Stars” is currently Number 13 on the rock radio chart and is featured on the band's latest album, Feral Roots. The outfit's sixth studio set has also yielded the chart-topping “Do Your Worst” and the Top 20 follow-up “Too Bad.”
