Melissa Etheridge is the latest classic rock artist to perform on Rolling Stone and IGTV's “In My Room” video series. Etheridge taped the performance prior to the death of 21-year-old son, Beckett Cypher, last month of a drug overdose.
Etheridge posted a message to fans on Twitter yesterday (June 8th), shedding light on how she's been dealing with her terrible loss: “I have made myself busy by fixing up my studio here in the house. It has healed me, greatly. While nothing but time will heal the empty space in my heart, I have been hopeful watching the world rise up and ask for more love. In a few days I will make an announcement about the new plans to return to my music. I miss you all and am so grateful for your thoughts and well wishes.”
On the tune “Human Chain” from her recent album, The Medicine Show, Etheridge said, “(This) is a song about how we’re all connected through our great diversity.” Before performing her 1993 classic “Come To My Window” she said, “Sending out love to everyone who’s been singing this song too much because their friends and neighbors and loved ones can only come to their window.”
Melissa Etheridge says that luckily, her pipes are not only intact, but these days, she's actually singing better than ever: “I think my voice is in better shape than it's ever been. I think I've learned how to take care of my body and that makes my voice stronger. I really didn't get that when I was younger. And just sort of wisdom through the years; you can just sort of reach into that on the performances.”
