Neil Young has posted the text of his lawsuit against Donald Trump's presidential re-election campaign for copyright infringement on his official website, NeilYoungArchive.com. The official suit will be filed in the Southern District of New York, with Young claiming the President's campaign does not have a necessary license to use his songs “Rockin’ In The Free World” and “Devil’s Sidewalk” at rallies. At press time, it remains unclear if Young has already filed suit, or if not, when he plans on doing so.
According to the filing: “The Campaign does not now have, and did not at the time of the Tulsa rally, have a license or Plaintiff’s permission to play the two songs at any public political event.”
The lawsuit claims that after Young and the Trump campaign butted heads back in 2015, “The Campaign issued a statement stating that it had procured a license to do so, thus acknowledging that it knew a license is required.” Neil Young is seeking” statutory damages in the maximum amount allowed for willful copyright infringement.” Rolling Stone posted: “That amount, for each infringement, is between $750 to $150,000.”
