100,000 tech workers have been laid off in the first half of 2024. This continues an overall downsizing trend that began in 2020. According to Layoffs.fyi data analyzing 3,544 tech company layoffs since the start of the pandemic, Google saw the largest single round of layoffs in January of 2023. 12,000 workers lost their jobs. Meta laid off 11,000 employees in September of 2022, and Microsoft let 10,000 people go in January 2023. The trend is not limited to the United States: Sweden’s Ericsson cut 8,500 jobs in 2023, and the UK’s Getir let go of 2,500 employees that same year. (DIGG)
