If you own a cat, you might also have some scratched cushions and chair legs. But do you know why your cat scratches your furniture? A team from Ankara University asked 1,200 cat owners about their feline’s habits, and found that stress is a top reason why kitties scratch up the couch. Top triggers include children and high levels of nocturnal activity. Nocturnal activity includes heightened playfulness and vocalization. Basically, if your cat gets the zoomies late at night, they’re also more likely to scratch your furniture. Owners can play with their kitties more during the day to help curb this behavior. “While cats are naturally nocturnal, they can adjust to a human diurnal schedule if provided with structured and engaging activities during the day,” Dr Yasemin Salgirli said.
