The hippo, which is one of the largest land mammals on earth, can apparently glide through the air. Researchers at the Royal Veterinary College in North Mymms discovered that when the animal is running, it spends 15% of its time completely airborne. Hippos can weigh up to 4,000 pounds, but still reach speeds of 18 miles per hour when running. Researchers found that all four feet can leave the ground for about .3 seconds. The study also found that hippos were more athletic than elephants, but less athletic than rhinos. (Times of India)
