According to data from the National Opinion Research Center, Americans’ trust in others has tanked since 1972. In Heartland states like Kansas and Nebraska, about 60% of residents considered themselves trusting of others in the 70s. That percentage has dropped to the 20% to 30% range. In 2022, less than 20% of Texans and New Yorkers felt that others could be trusted. Overall, the number of Americans who trust other people has dropped from 46.2% in 1972 down to 25.3% in 2022.
