Is this a battle of the gods? A statue of the Greek God Poseidon stands on a beach in Progreso, but Mexican authorities have closed the statue and may have it removed entirely. The statue was erected without proper permits, and local Mayan Indigenous Groups prefer the area’s own god of water, Chaac. Supporters of the decision to close the statue took to social media to celebrate. “Chaac 1, Poseidon 0” some posted. Defenders of Poseidon note that tourists enjoy taking photos with the statue. “It’s an attraction for our town and it draws attention,” hotel employee Lizeth Alvarado Juárez said. (AP News)
