The mayor of Paris has finally made good on her promise to swim in the long-polluted Seine River. Mayor Anne Hidalgo took the plunge on July 17th while sporting a wetsuit and goggles. She swam 300 feet and described the water as “wonderful.” Due to pollution, swimming in the river has been banned since 1923. The city recently focused efforts on cleaning up the water in preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games, efforts which were met by some resistance by protestors who claimed they would poo in the river. Two Olympic events are scheduled to take place in the river. (People)
