The barcode is now 50 years old! The first modern barcode was used on a pack of chewing gum in Troy, Ohio in 1974. At the time, the grocery industry estimated that about 10,000 stores would use barcodes. In 2024, 10 billion barcodes are scanned every day, including newer barcodes like QR codes. Even shipping services like FedEx use barcodes. “If barcodes hadn’t been invented, the entire layout and architecture of commerce would have been different,” MIT professor Sanjay Sharma said.
