A study from George Washington University found that organic chocolate may contain dangerous levels of heavy metals. Researchers analyzed 72 popular cocoa products sold in the United States, and found that 43% contained more lead than California’s Proposition 65 limits allow. Products with the “organic” label in particular tended to contain more lead and cadmium compared to non-organic chocolate. Fortunately, arsenic levels were low across all samples. “We all love chocolate but it’s important to indulge with moderation as with other foods that contain heavy metals,” Associate Professor Leigh Frame said.
