A Charles Sturt University study found that just eight minutes on TikTok can damage a young woman’s body image. Researchers recruited 273 female TikTok users aged 18 to 28 and asked them to watch fitness inspiration or neutral TikTok content. Those exposed to more diet or fitness-centered content saw a greater decrease in body image satisfaction than those who did not. Participants who used TikTok for more than two hours daily also reported more disordered eating behaviors, although more study is needed. “The most important thing TikTok users can do is to be aware that following or searching for any kind of content related to food, body or exercise may lead to inadvertent exposure to distorted body ideals,” lead researcher Rachel Hogg said.
