A recent salmonella outbreak in 21 states is related to small turtles with shells less than four inches long. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, turtles with shells that size are known as sources of illness. As of Friday, the CDC reported 51 illnesses and 23 hospitalizations in 21 states. Symptoms of the illness include diarrhea, a high fever of 102°, vomiting, an inability to keep liquids down and dehydration. For turtle owners, it’s advised to wash your hands after touching or feeding the turtle, as well as touching or cleaning where the turtle lives. It isn’t recommended to kiss or snuggle with the turtle or eat or drink around the turtle because salmonella germs can spread to your mouth and make you sick. (CBS News)
