Researchers from German universities found a link between brain activity and a participant’s favorite movie genre. 257 participants had their brains scanned to see if their movie preferences showed up “in their minds.” People who prefer action movies had a more active amygdala, and tended to respond strongly to fear and anger. However, crime thriller fans could be more attracted to unraveling a mystery over having an emotional response. Comedy lovers tended to be highly responsive to emotional situations both positive and negative. “It appears that people choose the film genres that most optimally stimulate their brains,” psychologist Esther Zwiky said.
