STIs are increasing at an alarming rate among the 55 and older community, experts warn. Between 2012 and 2022, chlamydia cases have tripled in this population, and syphilis cases increased sevenfold, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “We need to start normalizing that older adults are sexually active and interest in sex doesn’t stop at a certain age.,” Janie Steckenrider of Loyola Marymount University said. “Dating in your 20s was about getting married, having kids, cats, dogs – building your world,” Boomer Lisa Copeland said. “Today, it’s about fun and play.” Experts encourage older adults to get screened and tested regularly.
