35% of former NFL players fear they have chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. CTE is a brain condition linked to head impacts, but can only be diagnosed after death. Retired players believe they have CTE due to the symptoms they experience, which include memory problems, mood swings, and, in extreme cases, thoughts of self-harm. “While we wait for advances in CTE research to better address living players’ experiences, it is imperative that we identify conditions that are treatable,” Dr. Rachel Grashow said. It’s possible these players have different conditions that share symptoms with CTE, but are treatable. Conditions that could mimic the symptoms of CTE include sleep apnea, low testosterone, high blood pressure, and chronic pain. (Study Finds)
