One-third of children worldwide need glasses, and some experts say TV and playing video games could be to blame. According to a global analysis, short-sightedness tripled between 1990 and 2023. Short-sightedness runs in families, but is also linked to focusing on nearby objects, like screens, for long periods in childhood. Natural sunlight, exercise, and focusing on objects further away could help prevent the condition from developing. “There is something about being outside that is a real benefit to children,” Daniel Hardiman-McCartney of the UK College of Optometrists said.
