A review by the Cochrane Collaboration has revealed that fluoridated water is not as effective in fighting cavities as it was in the 1970s, in large part due to the adoption of fluoride toothpaste. The study examined 157 research papers to draw its conclusions. Before the adoption of fluoride toothpaste, fluoridated water was linked to a reduction of 2.1 decayed teeth per child. Does that mean it’s time to stop fluoridating water? “The evidence suggests that water fluoridation may slightly reduce tooth decay in children,” Dr. Lucy O’Malley said. “Given that the benefit has reduced over time, before introducing a new fluoridation scheme, careful thought needs to be given to costs, acceptability, feasibility and ongoing monitoring.” (Study Finds)
