Research led by a team from University College London examined health markers of middle-aged British and American adults. While Americans in their 30s and 40s had higher rates of obesity and high blood pressure, Brits were more likely to be smokers and rank their own health as “poor.” Researchers used data from 10,000 British individuals and 5,000 Americans. Shockingly, the study found that the poorest Americans were eight times more likely to have diabetes than the wealthiest. “We can speculate that differences in levels of exercise, diets and poverty, and limited access to free healthcare may be driving worse physical health in the USA,” Dr. Charis Bridger Staatz said.
