Researchers from California Northstate University College of Medicine analyzed 35 research papers and found that patients who listened to music after surgery felt less pain, a 3% reduction in anxiety, and used less than half the amount of morphine the day after surgery. “When patients wake up after surgery, sometimes they feel really scared and don’t know where they are,” Dr. Eldo Frezza said. “Music can help ease the transition from the waking up stage to a return to normalcy.” One theory is that music might help keep cortisol levels in check, but more research is needed.
