Idris Elba has announced plans to relocate to Africa within the next 5-10 years to enhance the continent’s growing film industry. Born in London to parents from Ghana and Sierra Leone, Elba aims to invest in film studios across Africa, with ongoing projects in places like Accra, Freetown, and Zanzibar. “I’m going to try and go where they’re telling stories—that’s really important,” he said. Recognizing the lack of facilities but abundance of talent amongst African filmmakers, he emphasizes the importance of showcasing diverse stories and cultures from the continent contrary to common stereotypes. “It’s really important that we own those stories of our tradition, of our culture, of our languages, of the differences between one language and another. The world doesn’t know that.” Elba is also involved in eco-friendly development projects such as creating a “smart city” on Sierra Leone’s Sherbro Island. (AV Club)
