Have you ever wondered why humans kiss? A University of Warwick study traced the practice all the way back to great apes, who groom one another as a way to bond. Apes pick parasites off one another, which helps keep them healthy but also strengthens relationships. Researchers hypothesize that because humans evolved to have less hair, we didn’t need to groom one another, but kissing still helps us bond. This is called the “groomer’s final kiss hypothesis.” “What was once a time- and labor-intensive ritual to cement and strengthen close social ties became gradually compressed,” the study reads.
