Scientists have discovered the hidden Mayan city Valeriana by using lidar technology. The buried city, undetectable to the naked eye, contains over 6,500 structures, including 50-foot pyramids, houses, and a curved amphitheater. Amazingly, the structures are located just next to a Mexican highway. This discovery has led scientists to believe there are more Mayan cities to be uncovered. “We can now see how much the ancient Maya changed their environment to support a long-lived complex society,” Tulane professor Marcello Canuto said.
