A United Kingdom study has found that humans aren’t the only animals who drink alcohol. Researchers found that other primates have been eating fermented fruits for millions of years. “We’re moving away from this anthropocentric view that ethanol is just something that humans use,” Kimberley Hockings of the University of Exeter said. “Most animals that eat sugary fruits are going to be exposed to some level of ethanol.” The ability to process alcohol would have improved in primates 10 million year ago due to a gene mutation. Possible benefits include relaxation and socialization. (Study Finds)
