Peanut the squirrel, who had gained internet fame, was euthanized by New York state officials over the weekend. Peanut gained social media fans over the past seven years after New Yorker Mark Longo saved the squirrel as a kit. Unfortunately, officials raided Longo’s farm and eventually euthanized Peanut due to rabies concerns, as the animal reportedly bit someone involved in the investigation. In the state of New York, the only way to legally rescue squirrels is to become a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. “We were ready to comply, we were ready to get the paperwork, we were in the process of doing that,” Longo said. He plans to take legal action over the matter. (CBS News)
