In 1972, Britain added another mandated school year for children, from 15 to 16 years. However, researchers now say the added year did not help protect the brain from aging. “We know that education is beneficial, and we had expected education to provide protection against brain aging,” brain researcher Nicholas Judd said. “However, the extra year of education appears to have no effect here.” The recent study, published in the journal eLife, analyzed the MRI brain scans of 30,000 adults. It’s possible education does increase brain size, but only temporarily. The extra year might also cause brain changes not seen in an MRI. (UPI)
