Researchers in Germany found that participants routinely underestimated how flexible they were. The study found that people can bend their wrists further than they imagine they can. “The brain obviously doesn’t have an accurate image of the body movement limits,” Dr. Artur Pilacinski of Ruhr University Bochum said. The average participant underestimated their wrist mobility by 10 degrees or more. This tendency might help prevent us from hurting ourselves. “The most likely explanation is that this bias protects us from injury because it prevents us from overshooting,” Dr. Pilacinski said.
