Italian officials have seized 2,100 forged paintings in one of the biggest busts of counterfeit art in the past 15 years. Pieces created by forgers were made to imitate works by over 30 artists, including Andy Warhol, Banksy, and Pablo Picasso. The works even had certificates and stamps of authenticity issued by complicit auction houses, according to AP. The investigation, now known as “Operation Caryatid”, began in March 2023 when Italian police discovered 200 fakes. The seized forgeries will be destroyed or used for “didactic” purposes. (newser)
