Local pilot Esther Sanderlin helped her neighbors in cold, rural Alaska by dropping turkeys from the sky for them to eat on Thanksgiving. “I was visiting our newest neighbor and they were talking about splitting a squirrel three ways for dinner, and how that didn’t really go very far,” Sanderlin said. “And I just had a thought at that moment, ‘You know what, I’m going to airdrop them a turkey for Thanksgiving.” Sanderlin dropped 36 frozen turkeys this year to help her neighbors. Since the packages land in the soft snow, there’s no need to give them parachutes. While she hopes to form a nonprofit one day, she currently runs a Facebook page called the Alaska Turkey Bomb.
