Killer whales are bringing back a trend they ditched in the 80s: the dead salmon hat. In the summer of 1987, a female orca started the trend, and the practice spread. However, the salmon hat fell out of fashion in 1988. Now, scientists have discovered another orca wearing a dead salmon as a hat in Puget sound, where the trend first originated 37 years ago. “Honestly, we have no idea why this started again, [or] why it happens,” researcher Deborah Giles said. Is it fashion, or function? Some scientists speculate that the orcas carry the salmon on their heads to save as a snack for later. (newser)
