A study of 3,400 Chicago residents found that one-third of urban dwellers have carried a concealed gun by age 40. However, those who carried a gun as a teen were less likely to carry as adults. While teens were more likely to carry following exposure to a violent event, adults were more likely to carry due to their perception of societal stability. “The majority of people who ever carry a concealed handgun start doing so in adulthood,” Dr. Charles Lanfear said. “For those adults, we found no link between direct exposure to gun violence and gun carrying.” By age 40, 47.6% of men had carried a concealed gun, compared to 16% of women.
