A report released by the American Medical Association revealed that Americans are sick for an average of 12.4 years. Mental and substance-use disorders were found to be large contributors to years living with disability. The gap between lifespan and healthspan…or the number of years someone lives compared to the number of years someone lives healthily…has widened by 13% over the past 20 years. “While people live longer, they live a greater number of years burdened by disease,” study authors Armin Garmany and Andre Terzic said.
