In response to President-elect Trump’s proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico to “the Gulf of America”, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum suggested parts of the United States be renamed “América Mexicana.” This was in reference to 17th-century maps showing that present-day American states New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and California used to be part of Mexico. This territory was ceded to the United States in 1848. Despite the jab, President Sheinbaum said she believed she would have a good relationship with the incoming president and that he had “his own way of communicating.” (Business Insider)
