An analysis of 2,307 Hollywood films made between 1980 and 2022 revealed that while women’s screen time has increased from 25% to 40%, leading roles still favor white men. Black actors were underrepresented in award-nominated films, although overall representation has improved. In modern times, films directed by women had an average of 50.1% screen time for women. More and more movies also show actors of different races together, which demonstrates integrated storytelling. “We find that there is still greater diversity in non-leading roles than there is within the leading ones,” David Bamman of UC Berkeley’s School of Information said.
