While many of us prefer warm or even hot water as we shower, the University of South Australia examined the potential health benefits of ice baths. Ice baths have been a health trend in recent years, but do they work? An analysis of 11 studies found that ice baths offer stress relief 12 hours after exposure. Those who take regular cold showers also take 29% fewer sick days, but when they do get sick, their illnesses last just as long. However, there are safety considerations, as ice baths can initially increase inflammation. “People with pre-existing health conditions should take extra care if participating in cold-water immersion experiences,” Dr. Ben Singh said.
