As we gear up for Super Bowl LIX, chips, nachos, dip, and chicken wings might be on the grocery list. However, many of these snacks, which are featured in game day ads, are filled with sodium and empty calories. “Our study highlights an important and often overlooked aspect of public health — how food advertising during widely viewed sporting events may contribute to poor dietary choices,” Nadya Vinsdata of the University of Nevada-Reno School of Medicine said. Researchers evaluated 102 food-related ads in 10 televised NFL games, and discovered the median salt content of advertised products was 910 milligrams. Researchers note that seemingly “one-day” indulgences can “add up” over time. (UPI)
