GLP-1 medications like Ozempic could help curb alcohol consumption. Researchers from the University of Southern California examined the alcohol intake of 48 problem drinkers while they took either Ozempic or a placebo. Ozempic was tied to reductions in cravings and in the number of drinks consumed. 40% of those taking Ozempic did not drink heavily for a full month. “These data suggest the potential of semaglutide and similar drugs to fill an unmet need for the treatment of alcohol use disorder,” Dr. Klara Klein said.
