The Texas Department of State Health Services has reported at least 49 confirmed cases of the measles. Most cases are in children, 13 of whom have been hospitalized. All confirmed cases have been in those who are not vaccinated against the disease. Measles, which is preventable through vaccination, is one of the most contagious diseases in the world. Health officials suspect that up to 300 people in West Texas could be infected. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has sent 2,000 doses of the MMR vaccine to Texas health officials at their request. “We educate, we encourage, we do what we can for the community, but it’s their choice,” Tonya Guffey of Seminole District Hospital.
