A study from Binghamton University found that periods in texts increase the perceived “drama.” Researchers showed participants different versions of text messages and asked them to rank their emotional intensity, and found that adding periods between words made a message feel more serious. Imagine reading a message that says “we need to talk” with a period after each word, for example. Texting this way takes more time, which means recipients feel the choice to add extra periods is meaningful. “Text recipients…assume this work was undertaken deliberately,” psychologist Celia Klin said.
