So far, the United States has culled infected flocks of chickens to stop bird flu…but the USDA may soon try a different approach. The Agriculture Department has granted a conditional license to use a vaccine against the H5N1 virus. However, this does not mean the vaccine has been approved for commercial use at this time. As of Tuesday, over 160 million chickens, turkeys, geese, and other birds have been euthanized. “If the announcement comes, we’re ready to vaccinate,” Carol Cardona of the University of Minnesota said.
