There are 38,400 golf courses around the world, and over 16,000 in the United States alone. A German study found installing solar panels on 25% to 75% of golf courses worldwide could generate between 281 and 842 gigawatts of electricity. Unlike golf courses, which require constant maintenance and large amounts of water, solar panels require minimal upkeep while producing power. A former golf course in Japan now contains 260,000 solar panels and provides energy to thousands of houses. “Our study does not advocate for the direct conversion of golf courses, but it highlights the vast potential for renewable energy on similarly large and underutilized areas,” Dr. Jann Weinand said. Golf simulators, which have gained in popularity, also provide a space-efficient way to golf. (Study Finds)
