Therapist Allison DuBois was surprised to hear other moms tell her “you don’t know love until you’ve had your son” because she had already had a child: a girl. But what is different about having a boy, and what is a “boy mom”? After doing some research, DuBois discovered “boy mom culture”: Where some moms become overly attached to or even possessive of their sons. “It can lead to blurred boundaries and an unhealthy dynamic…where the son becomes the emotional center of the mom’s life,” she said. If moms turn to their sons for validation instead of their partners, this can result in an unhealthy “enmeshment.” “Kids should not be responsible for fixing our feelings,” she advised. (AOL)
