Microsoft is going to retire Skype, the phone and video service that launched in 2003. The tech giant bought Skype for $8.5 billion dollars in 2011. Microsoft is now focusing more heavily on the Teams app, which also allows for audio and video calls, as well as meetings and file sharing. At its peak, Skype once had 300 million users. The service will officially end on May 5th. Skype users can download their Skype data or move it over to Teams. “Skype has been an integral part of shaping modern communications … and we are honored to have been part of the journey,” Microsoft said.
