34% of Americans’ stuff is non-functional, a survey of 2,000 adults found. However, that hasn’t stopped respondents from holding onto certain items. The Talker Research poll found participants had some strange collections, including: 100,000 sports cards; fingernail clippings; 300 coasters; 200 oil-burning lamps; gnomes; uranium glass; and porcelain pigs. Others paid homage to celebrities like Elvis Presley and Princess Diana with their mementos. “It can sometimes take you by surprise when you realize the amount of stuff you’ve got sitting around,” Nick Friedman of College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving. “You might even find yourself keeping things in odd places, like in the chimney or air vents, rather than decluttering.” 56% of respondents are planning to de-clutter come spring.
