So close…yet so far. 44-year-old Aurimas Mockus was just days away from completing his row from California to Australia, when a tropical cyclone prompted his rescue. The Lithuanian rowed for up to 12 hours a day and documented his journey from San Diego to Brisbane on Instagram. Unfortunately, Mockus had to set off an emergency beacon on Friday due to Tropical Cyclone Alfred. He was just 460 miles east of the Australia coast when he was saved by a Royal Australian Navy warship. “This successful outcome highlights the importance of carrying an emergency beacon at all times,” the Australian Maritime Safety Authority posted online.
