Could seeking happiness actually make you unhappy? Research from the University of Toronto Scarborough found that the pressure to feel “good” can actually backfire. The team ran four different studies surveying hundreds of participants and measuring how much they valued happiness, persistence, self-control, and more. People who were shown ads featuring the word “happiness” tended to eat more chocolates than those who watched neutral chocolate ads, indicating a decrease in self-control and potentially leading to regrettable choices. “You decide to try making yourself feel happier, but then that effort depletes your ability to do the kinds of things that make you happier,” researcher Sam Maglio said. “Instead of just going with the flow, you are trying to make yourself feel differently.” (Study Finds)
